Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October 1, 2026

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 1 in 8 women in the US will develop breast cancer sometime in her life, according to the American Cancer Society. Each woman’s risk of breast cancer varies based on her age, race and ethnicity, and other factors. There is no sure way to prevent breast cancer. But you can learn more about your risk and decide if there are things you can do that might lower the risk of having breast cancer.

There is no sure way to prevent breast cancer. But there are things you can do to lower your risk. This can be especially helpful for people with certain risk factors for breast cancer, such as having a strong family history or certain inherited gene changes. While screening cannot prevent breast cancer, regular mammograms can help detect it early. Mammograms have contributed to a 43 percent decline in breast cancer deaths from 1990 to 2022. The US Preventive Services Task Force now recommends that all women get screened every other year starting at age 40.

While mammograms are a common method of detecting breast cancer, new technologies have contributed to detecting Breast Cancer. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation shares how technological innovations show promise in reshaping breast cancer diagnosis:

  • Artificial intelligence can provide insight beyond human capability.
  • 3D mammograms and MRI offer more in-depth views of the breast.
  • Liquid biopsy looks for traces of cancer DNA in the blood.
