Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

September 3, 2024

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Did you know that 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime? According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death for men in the United States. However, early detection significantly improves survival rates. It’s important to know your risks of getting prostate cancer and get regular screenings.

Know Your Risk

Here are some Prostate Cancer Risk Factors according to the American Cancer Society:

  • Older age – The chance of having prostate cancer rises rapidly after age 50. About 6 in 10 prostate cancers are found in men older than 65.
  • Race/Ethnicity – Prostate cancer develops more often in African American men and in Caribbean men of African ancestry than in men of other races. And when it does develop in these men, they tend to be younger.
  • Family History – Prostate cancer seems to run in some families, which suggests that in some cases there may be an inherited or genetic factor. Still, most prostate cancers occur in men without a family history of it.
  • Inherited Gene Changes: Certain gene changes (known as variants or mutations) that are inherited from a parent can raise prostate cancer risk.

AI Model to Detect Prostate Cancer

A recent study published in Radiology shows the detection of Prostate Cancer using Artificial Intelligence (AI). The deep learning model can detect clinically significant prostate cancer on MRI on a radiologist level. The new model can potentially be used to assist radiologists and to improve prostate cancer detection.
