Take the Moment – Mental Health Awareness Month

May 1, 2024

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. 1 in 5 adults face mental illness annually, yet only half of them seek treatment, as reported by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). This year, the emphasis is on “Take the Moment” to highlight the importance of mental health and overall well-being.

Taking a mental health break is crucial for maintaining well-being and managing stress. Here are five effective ways to take a mental health moment:

  1. Disconnect from technology: Spend some time away from screens. Engage in activities that don’t involve technology, such as meditating, reading a book, or going for a walk.
  2. Engage in physical activity: Exercise can help reduce stress and improve mood. Take a break by going for a run, practicing yoga, or participating in a group fitness class. Even a short walk can help clear your mind and boost your mood.
  3. Connect with loved ones: Reach out to friends or family members for a chat, go out for coffee or a meal, or participate in a group activity that you enjoy.
  4. Practice self-care: Dedicate time to activities that nurture your mind, body, and soul. Practice self-care by taking a warm bath, getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep, or cooking a healthy meal.
  5. Explore creativity: Express yourself and relieve stress through creative outlets like painting, writing, playing music, or experimenting with new recipes.
