A Department of Health and Human Services survey found that approximately 46 million people aged 12 or older met the applicable DSM-5 criteria for having a substance use disorder in 2023. This accounts for 16.5 percent of the population and shows that is it essential to continue efforts to expand access to treatment and recovery supports. Leveraging telehealth modalities may help improve health outcomes for people experiencing or recovering from substance use disorders.
